KRS is locally known as Kannambadi . The dam was the first in the world, to have automatic sluice gates. The lake formed by dam is one of the largest in India. This dam was a built for multipurpose project to supply water to the agricultural lands of Mysore and Mandya Districts and power supply to Shivanasamudra .
Brindavan Garden is situated at the heart of the city. This garden is laid out below the KRS. As the sun sets, thousands of fountains of different size and shapes that are lit by colorful lamps start dancing as they are set to pleasant music. This Garden was designed by Sir Mirza Ismail, Diwan of Mysore .
It is one of the oldest zoos in India . After independence this zoo was handed over to Government by Royal patronages, who had flourished this zoo. Zoo has all the modern facilities and is as pioneer in breeding animals in captivity.
This church has 175 feet high spires. This church has St. Philomena’s relic of the 3rd century, which is been preserved in a catacomb, below the main altar.
A Chamundi hill is 1065 meters high above sea level and 800 feet above city. Chamundeshwari temple is situated on top of the hill. 1000 steps leading to temple are carved out of granite rock. On half way to temple there is huge monolith statue of Nandi, the bull. Near temple you can find gigantic statue of Mahishasura made of mortar. Beside temple there is a small palace belonging to Lalithadri, king of Mysore .
There are 3 lakes in Mysore namely Karanji Lake, Kukkaranahalli Lake in Manasgangothri and Lingabudi Lake in Srirampura . These lakes are favorite picnic spot as you can watch many migratory birds. Karanji lake has largest walkthrough aviary in India.
