Overview
Mahabaleshwar, known as the 'Queen of all the Hill Stations', is a popular destination famous for its placid lakes, verdant hills, and spectacular viewpoints. Its name is derived from a Lord Mahadev temple and three Sanskrit words: Maha (great), Bal (power), and Ishwar (God).
History
The history of Mahabaleshwar dates back to 1215, when King Singhan of Deogiri built a small temple and water tank at the source of the river Krishna. Through the centuries, the region was ruled by Brahmin dynasties, the Moguls, and Muslim Kings of Bijapur and Ahmednagar.
In the 17th century, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the region as part of his resistance to foreign rule. The Peshwas followed his rule until 1819, after which it became part of the territory of the Raja of Satara.
