Hill Station Overview
Lonavala is a premier hill station in Maharashtra, set amongst the Sylvan Hills of the Western Ghats. Located 106 km from Mumbai, it is a popular getaway from both Mumbai and Pune and serves as a base for exploring ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves.
History
The area was an important Buddhist center as early as the 2nd century BC. Due to the rugged Sahyadri terrain, it was historically isolated but significant to the Maratha Empire.
- Maratha Era: Ruled first by Chattrapati Shivaji and later by the Peshwas.
- British Era: Taken over by the British after they defeated the Peshwa rulers.
Major Attractions
Ancient Rock-Cut Caves
The Karla and Bhaja caves, located 11 km from Lonavala, date back to the 2nd century BC. They represent some of the oldest Hinayana Buddhist temple art in India.
Scenic Water Bodies
Lonavala is surrounded by numerous picturesque lakes, including Tugauli, Lonavala, and Bhushi lakes, along with cascading waterfalls.
Historic Forts
The region is dotted with ancient Maratha forts including Rajmachi, Tunga, Lohagad, Visapur, Tikona, and Koregad.
