History

Anciently known as Tripuri, Jabalpur was governed by the Hayahaya rulers and is referenced in the Mahabharata. Over centuries, it was part of the Mauryan and Gupta Empires before being seized by the Kalchuri and later Gond dynasties. By the early 16th century, it had become the powerful kingdom of Gondwana.

The legendary Gond Queen, Rani Durgavati, died here fighting the Mughal forces of Emperor Akbar. Following Maratha rule, the British took control in 1817, making Jabalpur the commission headquarters for the Narmada territories.
