City Overview
The hill resort of Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. It is bordered by the mighty Eastern Himalayas on one side and the plains of the Brahmaputra River on the south.
The township is characterized by light, earthquake-proof, wooden-framed buildings and traditional huts strewn along the slopes of green hills. The Governor's residence crowns one peak, while a beautiful Buddhist Temple crowns another.
The region is home to warm and welcoming martial tribes, offering a treat to the eyes with velvety greens and sky-soaring peaks.
Major Attractions
Ganga Lake (Gekar Sinyi)
A 6 km winding drive through primeval jungles, bamboo groves, and orchid-massed trees leads to this placid green lake. After an uphill climb, visitors cross the ridge to find a serene forest lake ideal for boating and picnics.
Itafort (Brick Fort)
The city takes its name from this historic fort built in the 14th century. A rough estimate suggests the structure is made of approximately 80 lakh bricks.
Buddha Temple
A new yellow-roofed shrine offering panoramic views of Itanagar Town. A tree planted by His Holiness the Dalai Lama stands in its grounds.

Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum
Showcases the socio-cultural heritage of local tribes. Exhibits include archaeological finds from Itafort and displays on traditional house types, festivals, textiles, and weapons.
Polo Park
An interesting botanical garden and viewpoint overlooking the town. It features a small zoo and a unique cane thicket that resembles a spiny palm bush.
Namdhapa National Park
A major wildlife attraction that is home to the rare combination of tigers, leopards, clouded leopards, and snow leopards.
