Traveler Snapshot
Glorious History
The glorious history of Tirupati Venkateswara Temple spans several centuries. Literary evidence and engraved inscriptions highlight its antiquity, showing regular visits from the Chola, Pandya, and Pallava dynasties.
Major contributors include Sri Krishnadevaraya, who endowed the temple with rich offerings, and Maratha general Rajhoji Bhonsle, who established a permanent endowment fund. After passing through Muslim and British supervision, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Committee took over in 1933, followed by a Board of Trustees in 1951.
The Temple Experience
Located on the seventh peak of the Tirupati Hill, this ancient temple is emblematic of architectural brilliance. The outer Gopuram is inscribed with figures of Vaishnava gods.
Notable features include the Ranga Mandapam (Vijaynagara style), the Aina Mahal (Mirror Palace), and the Dhvajasthamba Mandapam, where central pillars emit musical sounds when struck. The portals are adorned with statues of Krishnadevaraya and his consorts.
