Secunderabad - a major tourist attraction

Both the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad attract thousands of tourists each year. Though it is a small city, but the tourists who visit Hyderabad do not forget to add Secunderabad to their tour itinerary. Both the cities are separated by a bridge called the ‘necklace road bridge’, a popular tourist place, situated on the famous Hussain Sagar Lake. There are many fascinating and interesting places that attract tourists to this city. Secunderabad got its name after Sikander Jah, the Nizam ruler. It was founded in the 18th century as a British cantonment.

Places to see:

Rashtrapati Nilayam serves as the office and residence to the president of India on his yearly visit to southern India. It is a major attraction for many tourists. Located in the cantonment area, is the Trimulgherry fort built around 1867. Surrounded on all sides by a deep trench, today it serves as a military hospital. Another one of the noteworthy places is the Trinity church. It is a tranquilizing and serene place. One can also visit the Victorian prison. Though it is no longer a prison, this place has an eerie look. There is a deer park at Shameerpeth; 24 km. from Secunderabad that attracts many tourists too. One prefers over-night stay here because of the beautiful night view of the lake and the cottages around it. One of the heritage buildings to visit is the civil jail formerly known as the Old Jail Complex, near Monda Market.

Secunderabad is a major commercial centre of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Located in the heart of the city, is the King’s Way, now called the Rashtrapati Road. It is a major commercial attraction. The largest computer market, the CTC (Chenoy Trade Centre), is situated in the famous Park Lane Road where many renowned outlets are present. There is the Swapnaloka Complex, Paradise Circle, Patny, and James’s Street which serve as commercial hubs for the city. Some places of religious importance are also worth visiting. The famous ISKON temple, Sri Hanuman Temple, Sri Ganesha Temple and also popular Ujjaini Sri Mahakali temple are a must for devotees. It is also known for some of the churches too build in the 18th century by the British. The oldest church is the St.John Baptist Church and the St.Mary’s church is the two main attractions. Some of the sports and recreation attractions are the Gymkhana ground; Parade ground, Polo ground and the railway golf course attract sports lovers from all over the country.
